Originally from Chicago, Derek Mitchell spent the past 10 years setting artistic roots in the UK and the Netherlands, using a variety of characters to explore cultural differences with humor, entwined with love and care.

Through his art, Mitchell emphasizes the importance of moving abroad for the right reasons—seeking genuine engagement with a new culture, rather than expecting a romanticized fantasy. And while he considers the Netherlands home, Derek remains connected to the U.S., with plans to work and perform there more in the future. His hope is to bridge cultures and create spaces for immigrants and their stories, reflecting his dual connection to both places
